Is Gossip Harbor a Good Merge Game? PlayForge Review

Gossip Harbor is a mobile merge game published by Microfun Limited. It was released on Sep 9, 2022 and in just 4 years, they’ve managed to amass over 50 million downloads on Google Play alone. All of that with 633 000 reviews that average at 4.5 stars. This one must be one of the best merge games out there, right? Well, let’s go over all I’ve learned and then we can come to a conclusion together.

The Story

The most interesting part about Gossip Harbor might just be its storyline. It revolves around Quinn Castillo whose life crumbles in front of our eyes. She gets a divorce from a cheating husband who later tries to sabotage her business by poisoning food at her restaurant. If you ever played merge games, you already know that they have a flair for this type of drama. Honestly, it felt like I was a part of a telenovela. I had to see this story through. So let’s move on to the gameplay that can help me see this story till the end.

Gameplay

The main goal of Gossip Harbor is to renovate the restaurant and in the process deal with the mysteries revolving around Quinn’s divorce and food poisoning. To accomplish all of that, you need to earn money by filling out the orders from various customers. The way you do that is by merging items.

The items that you’ll have to merge can vary from sandwiches, fries, sea food, coffee, tea, for some reason dogs (?), and various other random items that you unlock as you progress deeper into the story.

Once you complete a few orders, you’ll have enough money to do a small action at the restaurant that can be either a trash clean-up, a conversation that unlocks a part of the story, or a small renovation that offers 3 options to pick from. Sometimes you won’t have that option and you’ll be just forced to pick a generic design.

Now for the part you’re probably most interested in — how does Gossip Harbor treat F2P players? Is it a pure cash grab?

My conclusion is that Gossip Harbor isn’t really friendly towards free-to-play players. Just like in every other merge game, as a new player, it feels like you’re getting infinite energy and progressing a lot with every step that you take.

But as time passes, the progression slows down and playtime gets very limited. When I log in, my energy is gone in a matter of minutes and with regeneration being every 2 minutes for one energy, I have to wait at least 3+ hours until I can play again.

It’s either that or buy more with money. By looking at the packs, it seems like it’s not a lot of money but it quickly adds up and I just feel like the value isn’t there. Even if I spend a couple hundred bucks, I don’t think I would be able to get a full day of gameplay. If you look at it that way, it seems pretty greedy, doesn’t it?

Don’t get me wrong, if you have a busy schedule and you log in once a day for 5 minutes, you’ll be just fine. But if you want to play more, you’ll get bored quickly.

Gossip Harbor also has ads implemented into the game. Fortunately, it’s not forced or in your face. They’re there as an optional thing if you want to speed up production item recovery or occasionally to get an extra item for “free”. At least they’re not popping up every 30 seconds like in some games.

While Gossip Harbor is constantly being worked on and there are always some sort of events going on, usually for those events you need some sort of “ticket” or points from serving the customers in main merge gameplay.

They offer rewards that can help you progress with the restaurant. It’s nice of them to constantly release new events but they also feel heavily designed for P2W players. Most of them are time limited and with limited resources I don’t think I’ve managed to complete a single one yet.

Generally speaking, Gossip Harbor is a nicely designed game, and it doesn’t seem like it was done by AI. I’ve been playing it for months and I must admit that I haven’t run into a single bug. The characters in it are semi-animated, where you can see expression changes according to the conversation they’re in.

I’ve mentioned that the story is what intrigued me and the lack of voice-overs is what’s keeping it from being a real telenovela. As for boards, just like any merge game available on Play Store, the main board tends to get cluttered the more you progress. “Luckily” you can sell items if you need to free some space.

Besides that, the UI is clean and simple on most days. Occasionally the home screen can get cluttered when they get desperate for money and push too many packs.

Conclusion

I’ve been playing Gossip Harbor for months now and while I enjoy it occasionally, I had my moments where uninstalling it seemed like a great idea. But the story man, I really wanna know. In hindsight I should have just googled it but I highly doubt that would help because from what I learned from other people, the story isn’t done yet. They expand it with each update.

If you’re like me and love this kind of drama-story merge game and you’re a casual player, then this just might be the game for you. If you’re looking for a merge game that you can play more than 5-10 minutes at a time, then I suggest looking elsewhere.
