Black Myth: Zhong Kui Is Coming — But When?

In a new wave of announcements, there was one that made my heart skip a beat. You can probably guess by the title of this article what it was. Black Myth: Wukong is getting a sequel. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the game, you must understand my excitement.

But the question poses itself. When can we expect to see the Black Myth: Zhong Kui?

Unfortunately, I believe that we won’t see the game released before 2028 and that would be pushing it. Depending on the scale of the project, the amount of people working on it, and other unforeseen problems that might occur – the release window might change.

To put things into perspective, Black Myth: Wukong was first shown on August 20, 2020 and it took them exactly 4 more years to release it. We’re talking about sequels here and you know how most companies operate. They’re going to try to outdo themselves with even better graphics, audio, animations, and possibly bigger maps. Which leads to more time investment. I got nothing against it, just trying to be realistic.

Who is Zhong Kui?

Zhong Kui’s story is one of those legends that sticks with you. Back in the Tang Dynasty, he was known as a brilliant scholar and skilled fighter, but he wasn’t exactly blessed in the looks department. He had a rough, rugged face with a big birthmark, and while he had the brains and the heart, his appearance held him back.

When he topped the imperial exams, he should’ve had it all—fame, respect, maybe even a high position. But during his audience with the emperor, things went south. The emperor couldn’t get past how Zhong Kui looked and denied him the honor he had rightfully earned. Humiliated and broken, Zhong Kui took his own life by slamming into a pillar.

But the story doesn’t end there. The King of the Underworld saw something greater in him, his strength, his spirit, and his sense of justice. Instead of fading away, Zhong Kui was given a new role: a powerful demon hunter, roaming between realms to capture ghosts and protect the living from evil spirits.

This is definitely a great story for the main protagonist.

Conclusion

It might take some time until we get more info about the game but at least now we know it’s happening. And who knows, maybe this one actually wins the GOTY reward. Stay tuned for more news and updates about Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
