AFK Journey Review – Is It Worth The Hype?

Updated on:

For a while there, the entirety of internet was bombarded by AFK Journey ads. Seriously, these commercials were everywhere—on YouTube, social media, even streaming platforms—and after skipping dozens, I finally caved. What’s the deal? Is this game actually any good, or is it just another mobile ad blitz designed to lure players in?

Launched in December 2023 by a relatively unknown developer, AFK Journey has managed to rack up over 1 million downloads in less than six months and it’s one of the best gacha games nowadays. It’s available both on PC and mobile, and you can seamlessly sync progress across devices with one account. Not bad for a newcomer in the crowded idle RPG space.

So, let’s see if AFK Journey deserves your attention—or if it’s just another flashy ad campaign hiding a mediocre game.

Getting Started: Character Customization and Storyline

The game kicks off by letting you customize your character. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking—customization options are pretty basic at this stage, limited mostly to a few facial features and hairstyles. However, as you progress, you can unlock additional cosmetics.

That gave me a glimmer of hope that the game might lean on these microtransactions rather than heavy paywalls. Cosmetics, after all, are a fair way for games to monetize without ruining the experience.

The storyline starts intriguingly enough: your character has amnesia, but surprisingly, everyone recognizes you as the legendary Magister Merlin. It’s a fun twist, but as the story unfolds, you quickly realize this isn’t your classic wizard adventure.

Instead, it’s more like Detective Merlin, because you spend a lot of time investigating and solving mysteries. Honestly, it reminded me a bit of Sherlock Holmes crossed with a fantasy RPG, and that unexpected detective vibe adds a unique flavor to the game.

Gameplay Mechanics: Assemble Your Party and Battle

AFK Journey’s gameplay revolves around assembling a team of five heroes to battle enemies and progress through stages. There are six hero classes: Tank, Warrior, Mage, Marksman, Rogue, and Support. You start with some free heroes, but naturally, most powerful ones come from summons.

Summoning is where things get a little tricky. My luck felt a bit hit-and-miss—decent but not stellar. This is typical for gacha or summoning-based games, but it does mean that you’ll sometimes get stuck waiting for the “right” hero to show up. Once you’ve assembled your team, battles play out automatically, so your focus is mostly on strategy like selecting the right heroes and upgrading their gear.

The key progression system here is the AFK (away-from-keyboard) mechanic: the game rewards you with experience, gold, and loot even while you’re offline, which is great if you’re busy. The amount of resources you earn depends on how far you’ve progressed in the AFK stages, incentivizing you to keep pushing forward.

Progression and Monetization: The Waiting Game

Now, let’s talk about what really makes or breaks games like this: progression pacing and monetization.

In AFK Journey, you have two main options for leveling up and getting stronger heroes:

  1. Wait and Grind: Collect resources over time by being AFK. This is the pure idle experience—log in daily, collect rewards, upgrade what you can, rinse and repeat. This works fine for casual players or people who don’t want to invest too much time.
  2. Pay to Speed Up: Of course, there’s a premium currency and in-app purchases that let you accelerate your progress, summon better heroes faster, and skip waiting times. The obvious advantage here is speed and convenience, but it’s easy to get tempted to spend more and more, especially when you hit a progression wall.

Personally, I’m wary of diving into pay-to-win mechanics early. AFK Journey’s monetization feels relatively balanced—I didn’t feel forced to pay constantly, but if you want to climb the leaderboards or advance quickly, spending cash will definitely give you a leg up.

Player vs Player and Replayability

There is a PvP mode, which offers some competitive flavor and keeps things interesting. However, once you’ve burned through your PvP matches for the day, you’ll find yourself back to the grinding grind or the waiting game.

That said, the game’s daily login rewards, events, and timed challenges provide reasons to come back regularly. While some moments feel repetitive, the blend of casual idle gameplay and occasional battles hits a nice balance for people who want low-effort entertainment that still rewards attention.

Visuals and Sound: A Solid Presentation

Graphically, AFK Journey looks great. The character designs are charming, environments are colorful, and animations during battles are smooth and satisfying. The art style is a pleasant mix of fantasy and cartoonish charm, which makes the whole experience feel light and approachable.

Audio-wise, the game nails it with fitting background music that sets the mood without becoming annoying. What really stood out to me were the hero voice lines during ultimate abilities—some are pretty epic and had me shouting along, even if I was alone in my room.

Final Thoughts: Who Should Play AFK Journey?

Despite some pacing frustrations and the inevitable temptation to spend money, AFK Journey manages to capture a sweet spot in the casual idle RPG genre. It’s easy to pick up and put down, offers enough strategy to stay engaging, and has a surprisingly unique narrative twist with the “Detective Merlin” story angle.

If you’re a busy player who can’t commit to long gaming sessions but still wants something relaxing, AFK Journey is a solid choice. You can hop in once a day, finish your quests and battles, then go on with your day without the pressure of constant grinding.

That said, if you’re looking for a deep, immersive RPG or a game with truly generous free-to-play mechanics, you might find yourself frustrated by the slow progression or the temptation to pay to speed things up.

But for what it is—a colorful, casual idle adventure with enough charm to keep you coming back—AFK Journey is definitely worth a shot. Just brace yourself for the ads and the occasional “wait a bit” moments, and you might find yourself enjoying the ride more than you expected.
