25 Best RPG Games for PC (Tried and Tested)

RPG games are somehow perfect for PC. You get that up-close and personal experience that you might not on a console and it feels like you’re more in control. Or maybe that’s just me since I played a lot of my first RPGs on my own PC, so it could be the nostalgia.

Either way, if you want good PC RPGs, you’re in luck because there are so many out there. And every year that number increases. Of course, that is the problem, isn’t it? Too many choices. Well, I’m here to help.

I’ve rounded up the best of the best RPG games for PC (the must-play, if you will), and also some hidden gems in case you played all of these.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3

best rpg games baldur's gate 3 poster

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great game but what makes it truly the best RPG out there is not just one thing but rather a combination of a few things mixed together.

One of them is rich storytelling. Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in a world of D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) and offers a profound and engaging narrative filled with choices that influence how the story unfolds.

Each member of your party has a personal journey and individual opinions which makes the game even more interesting. Their stories can also develop in multiple ways depending on how you interact with them, and you can even have romantic relationships with them.

Another thing that makes it stand out is character customization. You can create a unique character with a wide range of races, classes, and backgrounds, which also affects the story.

There are so many exploration possibilities, relationships and choices. Baldur’s Gate 3 has high replayability (it’ll never be the same twice) and of course stunning graphics and great sound.

All of it combined is what makes this game a perfect RPG that many gamers love to play. And if you get stuck anywhere, here’s our beginner’s guide to Baldur’s Gate 3 (with all the tips and tricks you’ll ever need).

2. Dragon Age: Origins

dragon age origins poster

The story of Dragon Age: Origins is set in the world of Thedas, filled with deep and engaging story that involves choices that can impact if significantly.

You get to play as a Grey Warden who is trying to save the world against a devastating event called the Blight and it also involves political and personal storylines. You can customize how the Grey Warden looks, their gender, race, and class. Each race and class has unique backgrounds that add to the depth of the game.

The world of Thedas is highly detailed and immersive with various regions available for you to explore. Each region has its own culture, history, and problems/challenges for you to solve.

What makes this game a great RPG (besides the stuff I already mentioned) is that no matter how long you play it, you’ll feel like there is so much more to the characters and the story that you’re missing out on.

And you know what, the most recent Dragon Age game isn’t bad at all (despite what the critics say). I had tons of fun playing it, so if you’re interested, you can find my review here.

3. Elden Ring

elden ring poster

Besides the impressive graphics, a captivating soundtrack and top-notch voice acting, Elden Ring is a great RPG for several more reasons.

One of them being the great lore and storytelling that was developed in collaboration with George R.R. Martin. You know, the guy who’s responsible for the creation of Game of Thrones.

Elden Ring offers a brilliant story that’s set in the open world known as the Lands Between. It’s filled with beautiful landscapes, all sorts of enemies, secrets and dungeons for you to explore. And while the combat might be challenging for some, mastering the timing, positioning and strategy is very rewarding once you get the hang of it.

What really makes Elden Ring great is that there isn’t just one way of doing things right — you kinda make your own path. Which means you can replay the game multiple times and still have a unique experience.

4. Ghost of Tsushima

I’ve been very vocal when it comes to the Ghost of Tsushima and it’s justifiably so. My experience with the game has been nothing short of amazing. The story is a masterpiece — I’ve really gotten immersed into the whole journey of the “fallen” samurai experience and I enjoyed every second of it.

Gameplay isn’t far behind either. The combination of travelling around on your horse, sneaking around various places, fighting all sorts of enemies, discovering all kinds of secrets is what makes the Ghost of Tsushima a very enjoyable experience.

And for the graphics and sound, don’t get me started. It’s a beautifully designed game that has so many breathtaking sceneries and on top of that the music and voice acting isn’t far behind.

5. Final Fantasy VII

It’s challenging to pick the “best” part of the Final Fantasy franchise. We were blessed enough to have so many good ones. Personally, I struggle to pick one, so I’ve decided to go with the vox populi.

There are multiple things that make Final Fantasy VII one of the best RPG games. One of them being a compelling story that just pulls you in and keeps you on your toes all the time. Prepare yourself to experience all kinds of emotions as you embark on this wonderful journey.

Final Fantasy VII features many memorable characters, each with their own backstory, personal reasons to what drives them and their own inner journey over the course of the story. Characters like Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth are basically icons in the gaming world that have impacted the lives of many.

The audio and graphics are amazing as well. The game’s backgrounds and CGI cutscenes are so groundbreaking that they set new standards for graphics and cinematics in the video game world.

And it just so happens that voice acting and soundtracks in the game are just perfect.

With so many side quests, mini-games, secrets is what makes Final Fantasy a great game that you can replay numerous times and still have a blast doing it.

6. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

the elder scrolls V: skyrim poster

The Elder Scrolls V is considered a great RPG for numerous reasons. One of the things that Skyrim offers is a great open world that’s filled with snowy mountains, ancient ruins, and big forests which you can explore fully however you like.

Besides the open world, it has intricate lore that you can uncover through exploration and also there are DRAGONS. As you explore the vast world of Skyrim, you’ll be able to do all sorts of quests, both main and side quests. Which can be done in multiple ways.

With a great character customization where you can customize not just your appearance but also a wide range of skills and abilities, you’ll be able to create a unique experience every time you play it.

Without going too much into the details, one last thing that makes The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim one of best RPGs is its awesome modding community. There are players that created mods that enhance the game, add new content, and even improve graphics.

With all those things and more, makes Skyrim a really great game that you can replay as many times as you want and still have an unique experience.

7. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

mass effect poster

It’s a difficult task picking which of the parts is the best one and luckily for us, we don’t have to. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a combination of three parts, over 40 DLC, promo weapons, armor and much more.

This way you get the whole experience for the price of one. You’ll be able to see the whole story unfold from start to end, meet new characters, learn about their backstories and much more.

The Mass Effect universe is well crafted, with rich lore, and a big line-up of planets and their respective cultures.

The game is also known for its cinematic quality, cool cutscenes, great graphics and also really good voice acting. All of that paired with an innovative gameplay that offers the mix of action and a strategy makes this a really great RPG.

8. Fallout: New Vegas

The story of Fallout: New Vegas is set in a post-apocalyptic Nevada, featuring the ruins of Las Vegas. It also has a vast open world filled with locations that have all sorts of hidden secrets and side quests.

The part where the game really shines in its “RPG-ness” is the character creation and customization, including different traits, perks, and skills, as well as the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system which is a great addition to character development.

Another great thing about the game is a variety of the factions, each with its own agendas, ideologies and conflicts. Which means that each faction offers unique questlines.

Also just like Skyrim, Fallout has a great modding community that with various mods can improve the look of the game, add new content and improve overall gameplay. Which also means this game can be enjoyed for many hours/days.

9. The Witcher 3

witcher 3 poster

The star of the game is a monster slayer for hire named Geralt of Rivia, also known as The Witcher. We get to play as him, while he is on a search for Ciri. The world of the Withcer is filled with great lore, history, all sorts of monsters and characters that make it very interesting to say the least.

Characters like Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, Dandelion, and many more that are featured in the game help you get immersed into the story even more.

Besides the great graphics, soundtracks and even better voice lines, the Witcher 3 also has some of the most interesting side quests. Most of those side quests feel like a story of their own and often put you in a moral dilemma. But on the other hand it’s what makes them so memorable. It also doesn’t hurt that the combat system is great.

And the Witcher 4 is coming out soon too? Here’s all you need to know about it here.

10. Cyberpunk 2077

cyberpunk 2077 poster

Last but not least, we have Cyberpunk 2077, a game that had its ups and down but finally we can call it a great game. What makes this one of the best RPG games ever is the combination of story, gameplay, graphics, and audio. All of that creates a very memorable experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City — a futuristic metropolis. It’s the year 2077 and the protagonist called V is hired to steal a biochip known as “the Relic” from Arasaka Corporation. The mission goes totally sideways and V ends up putting the chip inside his head. Which he laters finds out that the chip is overwriting his consciousness with the consciousness of Johnny Silverhand. It’s the type of story that gets the hold of you and you just have to find out how it’s going to end.

When approaching the gameplay, there are wide options to pick from. If you choose to do hand to hand combat you can, if you want to go gun blazing and destroy everyone on your path, you can. If you want to be a damn samurai, you have that option too. There are so many options on how you want to approach everything that you can replay the game as much as you like and still have a unique experience.

Also it helps to have perfect graphics, really good animations, soundtracks, and don’t get me started on voice acting. All of it is done in such a way that the game feels like it’s on another level from the rest. You really get your money’s worth with Cyberpunk 2077.

11. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

kingdom come deliverance 2 poster

This is a sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance (duh) and it’s a major step forward (but the first part is still amazing and you should definitely play it too!). For this one though, you’re back in 15th-century Bohemia, stepping into the shoes of Henry, a blacksmith’s son turned knight, caught in the middle of brutal wars, political power plays, and personal vendettas.

This time, expect a bigger, more detailed open world that’s packed with immersive quests and tough moral choices that actually change how the story unfolds.

12. Disco Elysium

disco elysum gameplay screenshot

Disco Elysium throws out the usual RPG rulebook and rewrites it with raw, unfiltered style. You play a detective with a shattered mind trying to solve a murder in a gritty, rain-soaked city full of political tension and personal demons.

There’s zero combat here (perfect whether you like combat or not), and most of the game is played through dialogue. Its writing is razor-sharp, darkly funny, and deeply philosophical. If you want an RPG that’s as much about introspection and storytelling as it is about world-building, this is by far the best option out there.

13. Divinity: Dragon Knight Saga

divinity 2 dragon knight gameplay screenshot best rpg games for pc

Divinity II is an underrated action RPG that nails the sweet spot between open-world freedom and satisfying combat. Playing as the Dragon Knight, you get to wield swords and spells — plus the epic ability to turn into a freaking dragon.

The story’s full of tough choices and memorable characters, and the skill system lets you build your hero any way you want. Sure, it’s a bit rough around the edges and the graphics show their age, but if you want a deep RPG with real bite, this one’s a cult classic worth digging into.

14. Red Dead Redemption 2

red dead redemption 2 poster best rpg games for pc

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sprawling, cinematic epic that blends open-world exploration with RPG-style choices and character progression. Playing as Arthur Morgan, a complex outlaw struggling with loyalty, morality, and survival, you get to shape his journey through decisions that impact relationships, story outcomes, and even gameplay mechanics.

The game’s attention to detail is staggering, from hunting and crafting to dynamic encounters that make the world feel truly alive. It’s not just an action game; it’s a slow-burning character study wrapped in a breathtaking, beautifully realized Wild West setting.

15. Kingmaker Pathfinder

If you’re craving a sprawling, old-school isometric RPG with deep tactical combat and a massive world to conquer, Pathfinder: Kingmaker is it. Based on the Pathfinder tabletop RPG, it combines complex character creation, party management, and kingdom-building into one ambitious package.

Expect to get lost in dungeons, weigh every dialogue choice carefully, and face brutal consequences that can alter your entire campaign. Its narrative is dense with political intrigue and dark fantasy themes. Yes, it’s rough around the edges at times, but the sheer depth and freedom make Kingmaker a fantastic RPG choice.

16. Vampyr

vampyr rpg game poster

Vampyr is set in a dark, plague-ridden version of 1918 London where you play as Dr. Jonathan Reid, a newly turned vampire and a doctor torn between his oath to heal and his bloodthirsty urges.

Every citizen you meet can be investigated, befriended or drained for power (both literally and figuratively). But every kill has consequences, not just for your morality, but for the city’s health and stability.

It’s a gritty, dialogue-heavy RPG where your choices genuinely matter, backed by a haunting atmosphere and a surprisingly personal story. While its combat can be clunky at times, the narrative depth and ethical dilemmas more than make up for it.

17. Persona 5 Royal

persona 5 royal poster

Persona 5 Royal isn’t just a great JRPG — it’s one of the genre’s most stylish and emotionally resonant games, period. You play as a high school student by day and a Phantom Thief by night, diving into surreal “Palaces” to change the hearts of corrupt adults.

It’s part dungeon crawler, part life sim, and all wrapped in one of the slickest presentations gaming has ever seen. What makes Royal shine is how much it refines the already-excellent original: new characters, deeper story arcs, fresh combat mechanics, and a vastly expanded endgame.

It’s 100+ hours of smart, turn-based combat, heartfelt character development, and unforgettable music.

If you enjoy turn-based combat in your games, then you should check out my list of top-tier games in that genre.

18. Pillars of Eternity

pillars of eternity best rpgs

Pillars of Eternity is inspired by classics like Baldur’s Gate and Planescape: Torment, and it combines tactical, party-based combat with rich, branching dialogue and a meticulously crafted fantasy world.

What sets it apart is the sheer depth — from its morally complex quests to a lore-heavy setting that feels genuinely alive. Every choice, no matter how small, has weight, and your party companions are more than just archetypes; they’re fully realized characters with their own agendas.

And if you like this part, you should try Dreadfire (the sequel), where you can be a pirate (kind of). Learn more about Dreadfire here.

19. Yakuza Like a Dragon

yakuza like a dragon poster

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is brilliant. Swapping out the series’ signature brawler combat for a full-on turn-based RPG system, this part reinvents the franchise while staying true to its soul. You play as Ichiban Kasuga, a lovable underdog with a heart of gold and a penchant for seeing the world through a Dragon Quest lens. T

You get all sorts of classes, over-the-top summon attacks, and some of the weirdest side quests in gaming — all wrapped around a surprisingly emotional and deeply human story. It’s equal parts absurd and heartfelt, and an absolute must-play if you’re looking for something fresh, funny, and totally unhinged.

20. Kingdoms of Amalur

kingdoms of amalur poster gameplay

Kingdoms of Amalur might not have the name recognition of some RPG giants, but it punches way above its weight. Designed by RPG legends like R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane, this sprawling fantasy world delivers one of the most fluid and satisfying combat systems in the genre.

Think God of War-style action inside a full-blown open-world RPG. The lore runs deep, the world is vibrant, and the class system is impressively flexible — letting you mix and match abilities to truly shape your character. It’s the perfect blend of action and role-playing, and with the Re-Reckoning remaster, it’s more polished and accessible than ever.

21. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

deus ex human revolution poster

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a masterclass in choice-driven design and cyberpunk worldbuilding. Set in a gritty, corporate-dominated future, you play as Adam Jensen, a heavily augmented security specialist caught in a web of conspiracies.

What sets this RPG apart is how it lets you tackle problems your way — stealth, hacking, diplomacy, or full-blown guns-blazing. Your decisions shape the story and even the way missions unfold. Layered with philosophical questions about transhumanism, identity, and control, Human Revolution doesn’t just give you freedom, but it also makes you think about the consequences. It’s sleek, smart, and one of the most influential RPGs of its generation.

22. Wildermyth

wildermyth gameplay screenshot

Few RPGs capture the magic of collaborative storytelling quite like Wildermyth. Blending tactical turn-based combat with a dynamic narrative engine, this indie gem feels like playing a tabletop campaign that evolves with your choices and remembers them.

Characters age, form bonds, fall in love, get injured, and even pass into legend, becoming part of the mythos in future campaigns. The comic-book style presentation is deceptively simple, but beneath it lies an emotionally rich and mechanically deep experience. If you’ve ever wanted XCOM-style strategy fused with storytelling that feels hand-written, Wildermyth is the rare RPG that pulls it off beautifully.

23. The Vale: Shadow of the Crown

the vale shadow of the crown gameplay screenshot

If you want an RPG that’s so completely different from anything else you ever played, and yet familiar, I present to you — The Vale: Shadow of The Crown. This game’s protagonist is a blind princess trying to defend her kingdom, and you’ll know it.

You won’t be able to see much, but the spatial audio, voice acting, and tactile combat system are genuinely incredible. The Vale proves that great storytelling and innovative design can come from thinking outside the screen.

24. Tyranny

tyranny gameplay screenshot

Tyranny flips classic RPG morality on its head. Instead of rising up to fight evil, you’re enforcing the will of an evil overlord who’s already won. That premise alone sets the stage for one of the most fascinating role-playing experiences in years.

Your choices actually matter — and not just in the final act. Every decision affects the world, the factions, and your own character’s twisted rise to power. With sharp writing, reactive storytelling, and an oppressive atmosphere that makes every choice feel weighty, Tyranny is a must-play hidden gem (sort of) if you want something darker.

25. Dark Souls 3

dark souls 3 poster

If you’re looking for an RPG that tests your patience, skill, and sanity, Dark Souls III is your gauntlet. This dark fantasy epic perfects the franchise’s brutal, methodical combat and cryptic worldbuilding. Every enemy encounter feels like a dance with death, and every boss fight is a jaw-dropping, controller-gripping showdown.

But beneath the difficulty is a rich RPG system: build variety, weapon upgrades, and a deeply layered lore that rewards exploration and theorycrafting.

Final words of wisdom

I hope you enjoyed this short list of best RPG games. There are so many of the great ones out there and including them all on the list would be an impossible task. Consider this list more as an introduction into the world of RPG games. Have a great day and enjoy gaming!
