Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action role-playing game by Chinese developer Game Science, based on the classical 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. It is set to release on August 20, 2024.
It feels like it’s been forever since the first time I saw the trailer. I remember thinking “Oh 2023 is a long time from now”. Now being in 2024 and the game is still not released, I do feel somewhat disappointed.
But if this extension is what they need to improve and polish their game, then I’ll happily wait a little longer. Now in this article, I’ll be going over things that we’ve been shown and also some of my assumptions/expectations about the game.

Gameplay
Black Myth: Wukong will revolve around “the Destined One”, a character based on a widely popular character Sun Wukong aka Monkey King. From the things shown to us, a couple of things are certain.
The Monkey’s main weapon will be his staff. The golden-banded staff can change its size, elongate and possibly fly, and attack opponents according to the player’s will.
Sounds like a ton of fun, and hopefully there are more interesting uses for it. Now you’re probably wondering if there are any other weapons besides the staff. While it’s unclear for now if there are any other weapons, my assumption is that there won’t be any other besides the mentioned staff.
However, there will be different types of armor. There will be four pieces that can be equipped on the Wukong, with them being a cape(shirt), wrists, boots, and cap(crown). Most of these armor pieces can be acquired by eliminating random enemies along the journey or some other way that they’ve yet to reveal to us. And eventually, we’ll be working our way all the way up to Legendary Gold Armor.
The next one that piqued my interest is transformations and skill. It’s shown that he can transform into a flying insect or giant monster. It’s a very cool feature, though I hope there are more options than just those two. And when it comes to skills, it’s a known fact that Wukong has many tricks up his sleeve. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.
I’ve also seen that there will be potions. Aside from the healing potion, I assume we’ll also get different potions to carry into various boss battles.
Now moving on to the combat system. If I had to compare the combat system to one game, it would be the new God of War games. That’s what they remind me the most of — but even though they are similar, there are still some differences. Black Myth: Wukong will have three different attack stances and you’ll probably need to change them to adapt to boss fights.
Graphics
The first time I watched the trailer for the game, I was blown away by how good it looked. And with more trailers and gameplays released, the quality of the game didn’t stop to amaze me.
The players who had the honor of playing the demo said that the look of the game does live up to expectations. Starting with the Monkey King design, which looks so great to various bosses who look absolutely amazing to the smallest details. And finally, the whole design of the landscapes that are breathtaking.
