There are over 80,000 characters in the Marvel universe. If NetEase were to release one character each month, they would be set for the next 100+ years. This is a fact, which is the reason most people are kind of angry that the game director said that they’re allowed to create original (new) characters.
In a recent interview there was a comment from Marvel Rivals director Guangyun Chen that sparked heated conversations across the internet.
“Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”
People aren’t happy with this.
“If I wanted to play original characters, I would’ve played Overwatch 2”
Which is completely understandable because many of us are hoping to see more Marvel characters brought to life. Some of those that didn’t make it into the movies or that were left out everywhere else — this is the perfect chance for us to see them in a new light. So I do understand why people aren’t happy — but, and hear me out here — it’s not that serious.
Overall, I think people are overreacting. While he did say that they have rights to create original characters, he didn’t say that they intend to do exactly that.
When working with someone as Marvel, there are so many things to consider(which I don’t intend to go through) but I feel this whole “original character” is more of a fail-safe thing. If everything goes sideways, they still have an option to try and save it all by going in a different direction (i.e. original characters). And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Even if what I said wasn’t true, they would have to sit down and discuss all of it beforehand. And the questions would have to be asked “If we were to do this, how would this affect our income?” and that’s where all further conversations stop. Because there are so many shooters out there, and people play Marvel Rivals specifically for the familiar characters and their storylines.
So my friendly advice to you is: ”Don’t take it to heart and just enjoy the game”. Everything will be just fine.
