Subnautica 2 is very close to being released, and it’s bringing some major changes to the series. This time around, the focus is on both solo and co-op survival, giving players the option to explore and build with friends for the first time.
It’s also a standalone story, meaning you won’t need to have played the first two games to follow what’s going on. With that said, there has been ongoing controversy due to game release being pushed for next year. Which in the long run might affect the sales. Anyways, you’re here for Subnautica 2 and for all the information we got so far. So, let go over it all:
Story

Subnautica 2 will feature a brand-new story, set on a different alien ocean planet called Cesura. While it takes place after the events of Subnautica and Below Zero, the game is being built as a standalone experience.
The developers have confirmed that narrative is still a key part of the it, but this time it’s being designed to support both solo and co-op play. So far, Unknown Worlds hasn’t shared specifics about the new setting, characters, or exact goals. What we do know is that Subnautica 2 will continue the series’ focus on mystery, discovery, and survival in an alien world.
Gameplay

There hasn’t been any long gameplay showcase besides the new teaser. Which was sufficient enough for a master detective like me.
The biggest news is Subnautica 2 is going to be co-op. Up to four players are shown exploring side by side, collaborating on tasks like scanning and base building. Players would be able to work interdependently: one can scavenge for resources, another can oversee construction, which will lead to us seeing some really awesome bases.
That will be an optional thing because the game will be primarily designed as single‑player first. Because that’s what the previous part was all about.
Also, there’s a new underwater vehicle that looks like a more advanced take on the Prawn Suit which is definitely built for heavier, deeper exploration. We also see tools like scanners and torches in action, which means gear upgrades are back and likely more useful this time around.
The world itself is completely new, and it shows. Bright coral reefs, massive cliffs, and deep, murky canyons all make an appearance. Everything looks sharper and more dynamic.
Creature-wise, things are getting serious. One of the trailer’s big moments is a massive, purple-glowing leviathan, proof that new threats are out there and probably worse than anything we’ve dealt with before. Smaller creatures look more detailed too, adding to that “this place is alive” feel the series does well.
And yeah, base-building is back, and it’s looking more flexible than ever. You’ve got modular layouts, multi-room bases, and full interior decoration. It feels like the system’s built to support both creativity and function, especially with co-op in the mix.
Graphics

From the very first shots, the game looks like a big step forward compared to the original’s visuals. The environments are sharper, more dynamic, and filled with little atmospheric details that add depth to every scene.
Character and creature models are also noticeably improved. We see high-res textures, detailed animations, and more complex designs for both small fish and massive leviathans. Whether it’s glowing tentacles, bioluminescent coral, or shifting sand beds, the world looks beautiful.
One thing to note is that with all new shiny improvements, you can expect an increase in price. Which is completely fair if you ask me but I can already see some people complaining about it.
Final words of wisdom
It’s still way too early to say what’s the fate of Subnautica 2 but as someone who really enjoyed previous installments, I’ll definitely be playing this one too. Make sure to stay tuned when that happens, I’ll be doing a full review once the game is out. Until then, stay safe and have fun gaming.
