5 Games Like It Takes Two (Must-Play, Tried & Tested)
Looking for games like It Takes Two? I get it — it was truly a memorable experience. My husband and I loved playing it, even when I kept getting stuck in random places, when I couldn’t jump the distance, when I didn’t understand what to do, when he had to take the joystick and just do it himself…Anyway, I’m sure it was enjoyable for him too.
It’s perfect for people who want to laugh and work together. All the little mini games and the different areas make it feel like a ton of games rolled into one. And it’s super hard to find something like that again.
But somehow I managed. It’s not a long list, but once you finish all of the games on it, you can also check out my two player games list. They’re not quite like It Takes Two, but they are great for two people. Spoiler alert: some (okay, a lot) of these games are on that list as well, but there are a few that might be new to you, so check them out.
What type of game is It Takes Two? It Takes Two is a cooperative-only, action-adventure platformer. It falls into the genre of split-screen, couch co-op games. Aside from that, it blends platforming, puzzles, and mini-games.
Split Fiction

Okay, so this is a good spot to tell you that this is not exactly the same. Nothing is. But it is close enough and I think that if you liked It Takes Two, you’ll also like Split Fiction.
It’s the kind of game you can laugh and argue your way through while also getting a really good, emotional story out of it. And just like It Takes Two, this can be played only in co-op. So, you’ll have to do everything with a partner.
The story is about two writers who jump between fictional worlds and each one has its own mechanics, and its own distinct style, so in that way it’s a lot like It Takes Two — in every area, you’ll find something new to do. Unlike It Takes Two, there aren’t that many mini-games and silliness.
But it’s still a really fun experience with some truly beautiful graphics and game mechanics.
A Way Out

A Way Out is another couch co-op from the same game developers, so this is probably the closest you’ll get to It Takes Two. But don’t expect the same sort of style or vibes — this is entirely different, except for the fact that it’s a split-screen couch co-op.
Instead of a heartfelt family story, you get a story about two prisoners trying to escape prison which somehow still ends up being surprisingly emotional. And just like in It Takes Two, you’ll get to play around with a bunch of game mechanics, tear up a few times, and will need to work together with your partner.
This one is shorter, I’ve seen people finish it in like 5 hours. And the ending is heartbreaking, so gamers beware.
Unravel 2

This one is slightly different in the sense that it isn’t a split-screen co-op and you can play it on your own if you want. But I recommend playing it with someone because just like It Takes Two, it’s a lovely bonding experience (and perhaps a more chill one than It Takes Two).
You play as a little Yarny who starts off in a barren world and follows adventure into new and beautiful places. You and your partner are connected with a thread which helps you swing around and save each other when needed.
There’s also an overarching story which is told wordlessly and appears sad but kind of vague as well — I don’t know, I’m still not sure what happened.
But anyway, Unravel 2 is really fun, cute, with some amazing puzzles and bosses.
We Were Here (series)

This is a game series, not just one game, so if you end up liking whichever one you play first, you’ll have plenty of content to enjoy after. This is also not a split-screen, but it is a co-op which you can also play online — which is great if you have long-distance friends or partners.
In We Were Here, you and a partner have to team up to solve puzzles, most of the time while not in the same room so you can’t see what the other is doing. This requires a lot of communication and it can be fun to see how things play out.
It’s set in an abandoned castle and you’re both trapped in there. Plus, there’s a really interesting overarching story/mystery to discover, but that you’ll have to find out on your own.
Chained Together

You might have seen people play this game on social media with their friends and for a good reason — it’s fun. Plain and simple, this game is so unpretentious and it doesn’t try to do anything new here, but it still manages to entertain. And in case you haven’t heard of it, here’s a rundown.
Basically, you’re in hell, but you don’t want to be, so you go ona journey to get out, chained together with other hell inmates. Unfortunately, getting out of hell isn’t easy at all, especially when you have to sync your jumps with other people — because if you fall, you go back to the beginning.
It’s not as polished as It Takes Two and there’s no larger story to speak of, but you might like it if you want to have a laugh with friends or test your friendship. The no-checkpoints thing makes it really hard to stay patient when someone flails their way off yet another obstacle.
So, give it a go or look up a few clips on YouTube, you might like it.
